Live Edge Walnut Table

4' x 8' live Edge Walnut Table Published in Fine Woodworking Gallery Issue # 294

This project began when a fellow woodworker asked for help building a new table for his daughter‑in‑law. Her old one had seen better days, and he wanted to replace it with something meaningful — a piece they could use every day and remember him by. She chose the design from a set of concept drawings I put together, settling on a clean, modern look with an X‑style trestle base.

We started with native walnut that we had milled ourselves and dried in my solar kiln. The glue‑up and sanding of the top took hours on my 37" sander, taking tiny cuts until the boards were perfectly flat. It was quiet, focused work — the kind of steady, methodical effort woodworkers know well.

The leg design was the real challenge. Creating an X‑pattern with a vertical support through the center required precise layout and accurate cuts, so I built jigs to make sure everything aligned the way it should. Once the legs were joined with a center rail, we used 6" lag screws and maple plugs to add a subtle contrast against the walnut.

When the table finally came together, it looked exactly the way we hoped — solid, clean, and honest in its construction. My friend was so proud of the result that he urged me to submit it to Fine Woodworking magazine. I didn’t think it would get in; plenty of talented woodworkers send in their best work. But it was accepted, and seeing it published was a moment of real pride. He was even more excited than I was.
