Sleigh Rebuild
A full restoration of an antique sleigh using the original pieces as patterns. Most wood was replaced, all metal was refinished, and the rebuilt sleigh was painted, upholstered, and detailed to match the period style.
Background This was a project I never expected to take on. My neighbor was a “horse guy,” and people often sought him out for sleigh and carriage restorations. We worked together on several projects, and this sleigh rebuild became one of the most challenging and rewarding.
Tear‑Down & Assessment Most of the original wood was too far gone to reuse, so the first step was a complete teardown. We disassembled the sleigh down to individual parts and used the old pieces as patterns for fabricating new ones. Every curve, angle, and joint had to be matched as closely as possible.
Respecting the Original Craftsmanship These sleighs were not built from simple flat panels. Many parts were shaped, bent, or carved in ways that required real problem‑solving. Even with modern tools, some pieces had to be shaped by hand because there was no shortcut. It gave us a deep appreciation for the original builders and the skill they had.
Metalwork & Refinishing All metal components were:
Sandblasted
Sanded smooth
Repaired where needed
Once the new wood was fabricated and fitted, everything was reassembled and finished with automotive‑grade paint for durability and a clean, period‑appropriate look.
Upholstery & Decorative Details We hired a professional upholsterer to recreate the seat and interior. A detailer added decorative artwork based on designs from a historical reference book, giving the sleigh an authentic, traditional appearance.
Result Every rebuild was a challenge, but we were always proud of the final result. The restored sleighs were solid, beautiful, and true to the original craftsmanship — a blend of old‑world design and modern precision.
